Communities Around the World - Learning About People and Places
In Social Studies, students will learn about the similarities and differences between world communities. They will learn how geography affects world communities and about the social, economic, political and cultural systems within them. In addition, we will study how world communities change and develop. We will do this through inquiry based discussions and activities about the topics of geography, government, economy and culture. We have an end of year celebration,Heritage Day, to share about the cultures in our classroom and our school.
Unit 1 - Geography
Essential Question: What makes places similar and different?
In unit 1, we will study the characteristics of different geographic regions. Students will use geographic tools and vocabulary to describe the location of world communities.
Unit 3 - Brazil
Essential Question: In what ways is Brazil similar to and different from other world communities?
In unit 3, we will study the diverse geographic landscape of Brazil. Students will also examine Brazil's democratic form of government and its culture.
Unit 5 - Kenya
Essential Question: How is Kenya similar to and different from other world communities?
In unit 5, we will learn how Kenya is similar to and different from other world communities. We will study its geography and how Kenya depends on itself and others to fulfill its wants and needs. In addition, students will learn about the cultural elements in Kenya.
Unit 2 - United States
Essential Question: In what ways is the United States similar to and different from other world communities?
In unit 2, we will examine how the United States is impacted by geography. We will learn about a democratic form of government and the diverse cultural elements of the United States.
Unit 4 - China Essential Question: In what ways is China similar to and different from other world communities?
In unit 4, we will study China's varied geographic landscape. Students will learn about China's dictatorship and its dominant culture.
Unit 6 - Making a Difference
Essential Question: How can the actions of governments and individuals improve life around the world?
In unit 6, we will learn about human rights. Students will examine how many nations and organizations around the world work to protect our human rights. We will discuss our responsibility to protect the rights of ourselves and others.
