Module 1 - How Books are Brought to Children Around the World
Focus: Becoming a Close Reader and Writing to Learn
In the first module, students study literature and literary nonfiction regarding children all around the world and what they do to gain access to books. Students build close reading skills while reading about people who have overcome extraordinary obstacles to read books. They learn what it means to be a proficient, independent reader, while assessing their strengths and setting reading goals. At the end, students write a report about how people access books around the world. The guiding question will be, "Why do people seek the power of reading?"

Module 2 - Adaptations and the Wide World of FrogsFocus: Researching to Build Knowledge and Teaching Others
In the second module, students read, write, listen and speak to build and share knowledge about frogs. First we read about the bullfrog and then read excerpts from the text, Everything you Need to Know about Frogs and Other Slippery Creatures. Students demonstrate what they learned by writing about one "freaky frog". Their writing will demonstrate their research and educate others about frogs and how their particular frog survives in its habitat.
